I am lucky to have just spent the last three weeks on the road between Canada and Mexico.
March 20th, 2014
I have worked in Canada a lot in the past, but Mexico was new for me. I was able to learn more about the culture, the people and the issues. Like the rest of North America, it’s an amazing place full of potential and great people. There is one thing they lead American and Canada in.....They don’t use decorative pillows!
I stayed in a really nice designer type of hotel, that wasn’t the Ritz, but was
designed by a famous Mexican architect, and has a real contemporary flair. Nice
sized rooms that are well appointed, as I turned on the lights, I do my normal
glance to the bed to see if my sleeping space is violator free.....It was! I hate
decorative pillows. Hate them! Little triangles, circles, and long tubes.
Can’t sleep with them. So the onus is on me to find a place for them which is
always the floor.
On Dictionary.com the definition of a pillow is:
“A bag or case made of cloth that is filled with feathers, down, or other soft m
aterial, and is used to cushion the head during sleep or rest.”
Well folks, it if doesn’t cushion the head and is in the way of your sleep, then
it shouldn’t be classified as a pillow and end up on your bed!
In Canada two weeks ago, my circular brown pillow somehow stayed in my bed last
night after I threw out (rather violently) the two red tube shaped pillows. I
woke up with my head on the side of it and threw that one out too. These
effectively serve to not only annoy me, but please the interior decorator who
thought it was a clever idea and convinced an entire hotel chain to do it. It’s
not so clever if they sell them at Target. I’m just saying. Anyway Ben Stiller
had it right in the movie “Along Came Polly”.
I want to fast forward 10 years when the hotel chains in America and Canada
follow Mexico’s lead on not giving in to interior designers that care more about
the way the room looks than works. You know, the old Form Vs. Function thing.
I would like to see normal sized comfortable pillows that I can simply lay my
head on and sleep. Is that so hard to ask?
¡Viva México y sus cómodas almohadas!
Steve
