After attending some great education sessions, I found my highlight of the event.
December 24th, 2014
The opening speaker on Tuesday night was Robert Safian, the Editor In
Chief of Fast Company Magazine, who reminded me that the best teams are not
teams of like-minded individuals, and that the modern trend is to hire people
who are individual survivors, not necessarily the best resume. He referred to
them as “FIO’s” or “Figure It Out” employees. At least that’s my take on it.
He said that these people that you hire you should be able to throw into a deep
end of a pool and they find their way out. Problem solvers. Not people who
wait on direction to perform, but are individual performers who can work with
minimal direction. Interesting. That sounds like the SRE team!
I also enjoyed the show floor as I always do. I learned about new products and
services, and updates on key cities, such as Hartford, Atlanta, Las Vegas,
Mexico City and Montreal. I got to sit in a Jeff Gordon NASCAR, and spend time
with my clients from FIRST and partners from Shepard, and many past partners and
industry pros. I know it’s a good show when I am thinking about my impressions
on the flight home. Way to go IAEE! Putting on another great show!
