A Note From Lance! Back to Basics

I had an opportunity to work an event as an independent contractor a few years back.

The job was being an event assistant, which I was way over qualified for

but I thought it might lead to other opportunities with this company.

When I arrived on site, I started to have second thoughts about being an

“assistant”, but I made the commitment and was going to give my best for

whatever they asked me to do. My thought process has always been “that nothing

is beneath me and I will do whatever it takes to get the job done”. I have

always worked with an owner’s mentality. As I was getting into performing the

task that I was given, I started to look at things in a different way. As a

producer of many large events I look at an event in larger segment scopes of

work and then rely on my staff to get the work done. As I was performing the

working scope as an event assistant, I started to see things that I would not

have noticed as a producer of the event – the smaller details that actually play

a large role in the success of the event. It was refreshing to be able to take a

step back and see things in different perspective. Throughout the course of the

event I saw new and different ways of getting things done.

After all is said and done the experience of being an event assistant allowed me

to look at an event at a different level and appreciated the nuances that I

might have overlooked as a producer and has made an impact on how I look at my

events from that point on.

So, the lesson learned is to every now and then take a step back and look at

your events though a different lens and understand that sometimes the small

details have a big effect on the success of your event.
